First steps

I don’t have a ‘crisis’, is therapy still for me?

You don’t need to be in crisis for therapy. It is a space to process the challenges in your life, and to help prevent them becoming a crisis.
It can also be an explorative place to help understand yourself better.

What happens in your free chemistry call?

Before committing to paying for a session, this is some time for us both to discuss how we might work together and for you to ask any questions.

What happens in the first session?

We will discuss why you are starting therapy, and begin to map out different threads of your story, including relationships and experiences. This is a collaborative process, so we will go at a pace that feels right for you - it is not an interrogation with expectations of sharing everything straight away.

Do I need to prepare anything?

Before our first session, I’ll send over a simple working agreement and a short form for you to fill in. This covers the essentials, like your contact details and how we’ll protect your privacy. Beyond that, there’s no 'homework' or need to prepare a script. You can just show up exactly as you are, and we’ll figure out the best way to work together from there.

Logistics

Where are you located?

I work in three locations that are easily accessible from Brixton, Clapham, Camberwell, Tulse Hill, Dulwich, and Herne Hill.

The Brixton Practice 34 Tunstall Rd, SW9 8DA - a two minute walk from Brixton tube station

WeAreHere 143 Crownstone Road, SW2 1NB - just off Effra Road close to Brockwell Park

Brockwell Space 135 Dulwich Road, SE24 0NG - a two minute walk from Herne Hill station

I also work online via video call

Do you offer evening sessions for commuters?

Yes, I work evenings on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays so commuters can come to therapy as part of their journey back home. I also offer early morning pre-work slots.

How long are sessions and how often will we meet?

I typically work on the hour. A session lasts for 50 minutes, so you’ll finish at ten minutes before the hour. I generally work weekly but have some space for fortnightly clients.

What are your fees and how do I pay?

I charge £70 a session and you can pay by bank transfer before each session.

Do you offer concessionary rates?

Yes I have a limited number of spaces for low-cost therapy sessions for students, low-income earners and NHS staff. Please mention if you are looking for low-cost sessions in your enquiry.

Do I have to commit to a certain amount of sessions?

No, I don’t ask for a long-term commitment upfront. We work on a session-by-session basis, paying before each one. Your weekly time slot is reserved specifically for you for as long as you need it, and we will simply decide together when you feel ready to bring our sessions to an end.

Do I need a GP to refer me?

No, you do not need a GP to refer you. Although, if your GP has suggested you try therapy I am very happy to discuss that with you.

The process

What’s the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?

The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy uses both terms interchangeably, although often counselling is seen as a short-term focus on current issues, whereas psychotherapy is longer-term delving deeper into past experiences.
Depending on your needs and hopes we will work out what approach is best for you.

How many sessions will I need?

This is a collaborative choice and it might not be clear from the start. It’s something we can discuss together during a chemistry call, and throughout our continued sessions. It might be your feelings around this change as we work together, and that’s totally normal.

Is what we talk about confidential?

Yes. Everything we discuss is private. The only exceptions are if I’m legally required to share information or if I believe there is a serious risk of harm to you or others. To ensure I’m providing the best professional support, I engage in supervision sessions, which are also confidential - supervision is a fundamental part of being a registered psychotherapist.

What do neuroaffirming and neuroinclusive mean?

If you are neurodivergent (or believe you might be) I work with your wiring, not against it. Being neuroaffirming means I value your unique identity and don’t believe neurodivergence is something that need to be 'fixed' or 'cured.' Being neuroinclusive means I adapt the way we work to ensure therapy is actually accessible for your specific mind.

Professionalism

Are you registered?

Yes I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, which is the largest body of its kind in the UK.

What happens if I see you out in public

This is up to you, some people prefer to agree to ignore and others feel more comfortable saying hello. In any case, I will always wait for you to make the first move, so as to give you the autonomy to choose based on whatever situation we find ourselves in.
